Sapphire & Steel: Zero Sapphire & Steel
"Zero" Part 4
Audio drama
Big Finish Productions
Written by Steve Lyons
Directed by Lisa Bowerman
June 2008

The space shuttle Aspirant comes to the end of its journey, with Gold in command.

Didja Know?

The opening titles theme of this episode has some distorted background music playing underneath it. This is likely meant to represent the disruption of the revelation that Gold has defected to the Transients and is willing to let Steel die to achieve his aims.

Didja Notice?

Sapphire scolds Gold that if it weren't for humans there would be no point to life because there would be no one to live it. Does that mean that agents like herself and Gold and the Transients and the higher powers are not "living" beings? Are they more like biological androids? Is that why they do not dream and have difficulty with emotion?

Talking to Sapphire, Gold sees that the only way to stop Time this time is for him to sacrifice himself in blowing up the shuttle Aspirant. He remarks to Sapphire, "This is how it works then. You and Steel. The secret of your success. He chooses the sacrifices and you talk them into doing what you need them to do...into thinking it was their idea." Gold is not exactly wrong, as seen previously with Sully in "The Railway Station" Part 8 and Jennifer Sowersby in "Daisy Chain" Part 4.

Steel seems to imply that the time he was asked to join the Transients was aboard a ship with Sapphire, though she didn't know about the offer. This may be a reference to their assignment aboard the Marie Celeste, mentioned in several previous episodes. Steel goes on to say that it was Sapphire who opened his eyes that he was already working for the right side; it was her compassion for the humans.
