Sapphire & Steel
"Second Sight" Part 4
Audio drama
Big Finish Productions
Written and directed by Nigel Fairs
April 2008 |
Sapphire and Steel meet Sapphire and Steel.
Didja Know?
In the "Second Sight" storyline, Sapphire and Steel have seemingly
been replaced by new individuals using the same names. The new
individuals speak with what seem to be Australian accents instead of
British and the pair seem to have transposed personalities, with
Sapphire being impatient, stern, and often rude and Steel being more
kind-hearted; but they each seem to have the same individual
abilities. The mystery of this new pair is resolved in
"Second Sight" Part 4, connected to the state we last
saw the original pair at the end of
"The Mystery of
the Missing Hour" Part 3, trapped on an audio CD that had just
run out its play-time.
This four-part storyline features a new version of the classic
Sapphire & Steel theme and opening
monologue, represented the altered Sapphire and Steel depicted here,
perhaps also an altered organization which sends them on their
missions. Listen:

Didja Notice?
Snatches of dialog from previous episodes of the
Sapphire & Steel audio adventures
are heard during this episode.
At 2:55, Ruby uses the phrase "open sesame".
The phrase "open sesame" as a magical command originates
from the English translation of the classic Arabic tale,
Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves.
Ruby uses some Prokofiev in her
attempt to close the fissure between fiction and reality.
Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) was a Russian composer.
At 8:35, the radio announcer of 1949 describes a celebration
of crowds thronging Piccadilly. Piccadilly is a major road
running through Westminster, London.
When Ruby finally helps the "real" Sapphire and Steel escape
the CD collection, the new, young Sapphire and Steel have to
be eliminated. Before they go, the young pair share a kiss.
The old Steel is flabbergasted, asking, "What are they
doing?", to which Sapphire responds, "I believe they're
kissing, Steel...remember what that was like, do you?" What
is Sapphire referring to? Have the older pair kissed each
other before? There is a moment in
the TV episode "Dr. McDee Must Die" Part 4
where it appears as if they are about to kiss during a
telepathic conversation they're having, but the camera pans
up over their heads at this point so we don't see the actual
kiss, if they did indeed do so.
At the end of the episode, it seems that Steel has possibly
had a moment of humanity and shunted the young Sapphire and
Steel into a CD that he keeps in Davey's Walkman so they can
at least have a life of a sort in that other world instead
of eliminating them.
