the darkness
Didja Notice?
Twin Peaks note: The "darkness" here is said to
feed on the resentment of the dead. Steel tells the dead
Pvt. Pearce that if the other spirits arrive, the darkness
will start it all over again, with Pearce first arriving,
keeping everything in a loop so it can keep feeding. "You
will arrive here again and will start to wait for the
others. It's like a loop, a circle. It is feeding on you so
it cannot let you go. Forever, Pearce. You'll never see
those green fields or summer days. Forever. The same
motions, the same actions, same circle." This sounds similar
to the denizens of the Black Lodge feeding on pain and
sorrow (garmonbozia) in Twin Peaks and the time
intortion elements that occur in that series.
Steel tricks Tully into giving up his life to appease the
darkness. Steel, already a morally ambiguous character,
becomes even more so here.
Having dispelled the darkness from the railway station at
the cost of Tully's life, Sapphire and Steel take their
leave, each suddenly vanishing. Where is it they disappear to
at the end of an assignment?
